Advantages Of Vintage Décor
Determining the style of décor for your home is a big decision and along with that you must also decide whether or not to use new decorating items, vintage décor or antique home décor items or a combination. It all depends on the look that you’re trying to achieve as well as the amount of money you want to spend.
One practical advantage of purchasing and decorating with vintage décor items is that they will increase in value. Unlike buying a new car that depreciates as soon as you drive it off the lot, vintage décor will only grow in value each year. While the items may or may not need to be insured, they will retain their value and remain an asset, not a liability. Another advantage is that these items can become a family heirloom to pass down through generations. And if maintained and well taken care of, allowing for minimal wear and tear, sometime in the future these pieces will change from vintage to antique status.
Decorating With New Items
The extent of the decorating project and how many rooms will be undergoing transformation can help determine if new items or vintage décor items should be used. While new items can range from inexpensive to expensive, the cost should be significantly less than purchasing an actual vintage décor item that is over 75 years old, for example. Reproductions of popular pieces are readily available and this is an important element to factor in when deciding new versus vintage. Another issue to consider is if you are purchasing an actual piece or pieces of vintage décor and they are very expensive, you may need to consider insuring each piece, which adds to the original cost.
Where To Find Vintage Décor
The types of vintage décor that can be used for decorating your home range from art deco prints, depression glass vases, porcelain figurines, stoneware pottery and wooden sculptures to vintage perfume bottles, 1950’s kitchen canisters, wooden napkin holders, vintage business signs, furniture and cuckoo clocks, to name just a few. These items can be found at online stores specializing in vintage décor items. Other sources to consider are online auction sites, eBay and in some instances, a local thrift shop or even a neighborhood yard sale can produce a vintage piece at a bargain price. A good professionally run estate sale is a good place to pick up vintage décor at reasonable prices but keep in mind that prices can vary depending on where you purchase the pieces.
