Too often people see antique furniture or old advertising signs and believe they will fit into their desire for country style home decorating. In reality, there are many different types of decorations that can be used in décor described as country, but the time period of many of the items is important to their relevance in the décor. While it is acceptable in country style home decorating to bring several different years of history together in one room, the style may not be complimentary to others.

For example, there may be some confusion between what constitutes an antique and what is just plain old. Not everything over a set number of years is an antique and some things that are antique may not be worth collecting. In many instances, people will fill every gap and small space with accepts in a country motif and end up with a jumbled mess. By leaving some white space, that is open areas between furniture and accents, the room may take on a look of being less cluttered, allowing visitors to actually appreciate what it contains.

There are some who believe that country style home decorating gives them the excuse to drag every piece of old furniture that have accumulated over the years, along with every sign, wall hanging and picture of farm animals they can lay their hands on. For the most part, this is not country style home decorating. It is simply moving the piles from their hiding place into the main focus of the home.

For those who understand the object of country style home decorating and walk into the home of someone who does not, critics may not be appreciated unless asked. Remember, everyone has different tastes as well as what country style home decorating is all about and this homeowner may feel the same about another’s home as others feel about theirs.
