44_tipsorfall.jpeg(NC)-When fall comes, the days get shorter and there is a chill in the air. We start decorating our homes again, anticipating the holiday season and the long winter ahead. Sally Morse, Director of Creative Services for Hunter Douglas (1-800-265-1363; www.hunterdouglas.ca) Canada’s leading window fashions manufacturer, offers the following tips for fall decorating:

Layer: Put a throw at the foot of the bed for naps or at the end of the sofa. Pull out a tray and dress it with candles, fresh apples, pears and branches and use it as great centerpiece for a coffee table or a dining room. Take a napkin and layer it over the back of a dining room or kitchen chair with the points going down - tuck it in and put ribbon around it.

Bring rich colour into the home: Look and see where you need a fresh coat of paint - white is not as good in the colder weather - it can be replaced by a taupe or gold - layering with paint color. Add pillows in rich colors as well. Update your window fashions in new colours. Vignette Modern Roman Shades come in 94 fabric and colour choices to suit any taste. And this innovative product is now available with the Top-Down / Bottom-Up design option, allowing you to lower the shade from the top-down or bottom-up for privacy, plus light control and superb views.

As the daylight recedes in the fall months, layer your lighting as well: Invest in window fashions such as Luminette Privacy Sheers that consist of soft fabric sheers with rotating fabric vanes behind them for privacy and light control. They’re offered this fall in a larger vane size with new fabrics and colours and a traveling wand. Also invest in new lamps and wall sconces in the bathroom and the bedroom. If you are over the age of 50, you need twice as much light to see things as you do at 20. Take a hot glue gun and put beaded crystals on the bottom of the lampshades to add va va voom!

Add warmth: A good way to add warmth is with texture - it is casual, comfy and cozy. Use area rugs in wonderful textures and colours. Bring the natural look of wood to the window with Hunter Douglas wood blinds. Place a wicker basket with moss balls, hedge apples, pumpkin gourds and rattan-covered pieces by the fireplace or in the entry. Take advantage of all that Mother Nature has to offer.
