Dorm décor
(NC)-It’s the time of year when college and university students gear up for eight months of dormitory living. Many dorms are far from being cozy coves and students may not have a lot of money to create comfort in this short-term living space. With this in mind, here are some budget friendly ideas from The Home Depot Canada that will turn a concrete box into a relaxing student retreat without breaking the bank:
Start from the ground up. Area rugs are an easy way to quickly enhance a living space and there are many styles and sizes available to suit any taste.
A splash of colour. Add colour to a space by painting wooden furniture like a bookcase, TV stand or shelf. Consider adding bowls, vases and picture frames to create a cozier feel to the room.
Wall décor. Invigorate the walls by hanging up framed artwork, wall decals and photos of family and friends. Mirrors are also a welcome addition to the wall - they’re functional and can make the room appear larger.
Cover up. Window treatments add an immediate visual impact to a room. Use a tension rod to hang any material of choice without the use of nails or screws.
Groovy gadgets. Traditional dorm-room essentials, like mini-fridges, now come in great colours and styles, including NHL team logos for the sports fan. Adding other appliances like a coffee maker, toaster oven or microwave will create added convenience. Before packing any appliance for the move, make sure to check with building rules to see what is allowed.
Light it up. Go beyond the room’s fluorescent lighting by adding an attractive lamp on the desk, near a reading chair or beside the bed.
Smart storage. Keep the space tidy with storage solutions throughout the room. Rubbermaid carries a wide variety of plastic and wire bins for under the bed, on the desk and in the closet.
The write stuff. A cork, chalk or dry erase board is a practical item in any dorm room. Add a personal touch by decorating the edges with paint and accessories.
