How to Care for Your Formica Countertop
Formica countertops have been around for decades and remain one of the most popular materials today. The reason for this is that you can get a great looking countertop without breaking your bank account. They will also last you a lifetime if they are cared for properly. The care and maintenance of your Formica countertop will be the focus of this article.
Cleaning
The cleaning of Formica countertops is usually fairly straightforward and simple, but certain things should be considered. For general cleaning, usually nothing more than soapy water and a rag are required. Since streaking is sometimes a problem for this type of countertop, a simple window cleaning agent should be used to take them out.
If something is spilled on the countertop, it’s important to get it cleaned up as soon as possible. Depending on what the substance is, it may leave permanent stains. The most important thing to remember is to avoid using abrasive cleansers, because the surface can be easily scratched.
Other Things to Think About
There are also other things to consider when dealing with Formica countertops. First, they are not very heat resistant, so avoid placing hot items or flames on them. This type of material will burn if it is not cared for properly. Never cut vegetables or anything else directly on Formica countertops. They will scratch easily, and you do not want to leave behind ugly knife marks after you cut.
Always use a cutting board to prevent this. Also, avoid using any chemicals that contain acids around your countertops. They will quickly begin to eat through the surface. If you do happen to spill something like this on your countertop, clean it up as quickly as possible.
If it doesn’t start eating through the surface, it could still discolor it. Another important thing to remember is the seam lines in your countertops. If they are allowed to become flooded with water, it will begin to expand and damage the unit. Clean up all spills as soon as possible.
If you follow these simple guidelines, your Formica countertop will last for years to come. This type of countertop will save you some money, but only if you can commit to caring for it properly. If not, you will just be spending money to replace it later on. If you don’t think you can commit to this type of care and maintenance, you should probably spend some extra money for a more durable type of countertop.
